Applied Behavior Analysis is the science of studying human behavior which came about in the early 1900s. John Watson, B.F. Skinner, and Ivan Pavlov are just a few of ABA’s founding fathers.

Behavior Analysts consider a behavior as “any response that can be observed and measured.” ABA uses the principles of reinforcement are used to increase and decrease behaviors. Some examples of behaviors that an analyst can help increase are language (i.e., verbal behavior), reading, self-care skills (e.g., toileting, dressing, and brushing teeth), social and play skills, community and daily living skills (e.g., crossing the street safely, grocery shopping, and cooking). Behaviors that analysts can help decrease are hitting, biting, screaming, hand flapping, verbal repetition, and swearing.

Teaching Methods

  • Verbal Behavior (VB)
  • Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT)
  • Prompting and Fading
  • Shaping and Chaining
  • Natural Environment Teaching (NET)
  • Errorless Learning
  • Reinforcement

Behavior Analysis can be implemented in any environment. Typically, analysts like to teach in the natural environment (e.g., home, school, and community).

Behavior Analysis is typically implemented by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). However, North Shore Pediatric Therapy offers Behavior Therapists who are supervised by BCBA’s to help implement the curriculum and programming.
